Jason Hurdich: In So Many Works: A Reflection on the American Deaf Community

Jason Hurdich: In So Many Works: A Reflection on the American Deaf Community

American Deaf Community, deaf awareness, Jason Hurdich
The Horry County Museum, the Horry County Library and The AVX Foundation present a program on Saturday, March 10th at 10:00 AM featuring certified deaf interpreter Jason Hurdich. Mr. Hurdich will promote deaf awareness, share about his role as an interpreter, and offer ways that people can reach out more to the deaf community. Originally from New York City, Hurdich attended the Lexington School for the Deaf as a toddler until his graduation as valedictorian. He has instructed college level American Sign Language and interpreting classes for twenty-five years and received a Master of Education degree in Signed Language Interpretation from the University of North Florida. Hurdich became well-known throughout South Carolina during the 2016 coverage of Hurricane Matthew when he signed at press conferences held by then Governor Nikki Hayley, who went on to call Hurdich a ‘Rock Star’ for his role as an interpreter. He was selected as the 2017 winner of Marie Griffin Interpreter Of The Year Award for the Southeast Region recognizing his outstanding service to the Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Deaf-Blind community for the higher efforts in making communication more accessible and increasing awareness for the need of better communication. In his free time, Mr. Hurdich enjoys being around his four children, taking in a sports game, and taking in the sights of our beautiful nation. Mr. Hurdich will be assisted in the program by interpreters Roger Williams and Katie Reininger. The program will be held in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street, Conway SC and is free and open to the public.
